News Release

Solid State Breakdance Collective in EtchASketch
March 2005

The Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts
School of Fine Arts and Youth Institute
proudly presents
Solid State Breakdance Collective
EtchASketch
March 10th, 12th and 13th, 2005

EtchASketch
60 mins.
8 dancers + DJ.

Based in an abstract world of grids, concrete walls, blaring lights and noise, the choreography contrasts organic flow with angular spatial patterns sourced from both the Etch-a-Sketch toy, and traditional breakdance vocabulary. A breakbeat DJ, video, duos, solos and intricate group choreography are woven into a live integrated, comedic performance.

Solid State Breakdance Collective

Since 1999 Solid State Breakdance Collective has been one of the only all-female groups performing breakdance inspired shows in theatres. Solid State’s vision encompasses a creative style that blends contemporary dance concepts and innovations that stem from the urban dance languages. Solid State’s choreographies highlight the fluidity and physicality of urban dance, while conveying compelling images of city life, urban landscapes and ideas of movement abstraction. Preserving the unadulterated or “raw” spontaneity and the quality of improvisation is the challenge of translating a street dance-form to a formal stage presentation.

In addition to many “freestyle” dance performances in clubs, at benefits, schools and street festivals, the collective has also created and presented 4 choreographies over the last 5 years. These choreographies were presented in venues including: Espace Tangente, and the Ottawa and Montreal Fringe Festivals. Each show is unique, displaying the group’s versatility that is a product of their broad dance experiences ranging from clubbing and b-boying to ballet and contemporary dance. Due to their long-standing collaboration and exchange of talents, Solid State delivers an incomparable performance on stage.

In 2003, Solid State became the first Breakdance dance company to be awarded a Production Grant by the Canada Council for the Arts. Since then, Breakdance has been one of the recognized forms of dance by the Canada Council.
