The Yiddish Theatre Tours to Vienna
October 2002
MONTREAL, October, 2002 - The newly named Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre will be hitting the road in October, touring its runaway hit, Sholom Aleichem’s Double Identity, to Vienna. The show will be performed alternately with Grine Felder, by Peretz Hirshbein.
Bryna Wasserman, who will direct both productions, is very excited to be returning to Vienna, where the ensemble cast performed On Second Avenue just three years ago. “We were so flattered to be asked back, we absolutely had to go! Our troupe represents not only the living Yiddish culture, but also Canada and the Canadian principle of supporting multicultural communities. We prove that our culture has survived against all odds.” What makes all this even more interesting is that the shows will be playing to a largely non-Jewish audience.
No small undertaking, the trip to Vienna has generated a whirlwind of planning. The Saidye Bronfman Centre has shipped off a 40-foot container filled to the brim with sets, props and costumes, and 40 happy travelers – 32 cast members, 5 crew and 3 supporters – are set to follow.
The two plays work well in tandem, showing contrasting sides of Jewish life in turn-of-the-century Russia. Together they provide insight on both rural and urban life at the time. The tour is being sponsored in part by the Jewish Institute for Adult Education of Vienna with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada, and the performances take place at the 500-seat Akzent Theatre October 15-20. Please drop by if you’re in the neighbourhood!
