Free conference
Tuesday, February 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm

Within the context of our current exhibition, The Weather, the Liane and Danny Taran Gallery of the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts is pleased to present a free conference by two of the country's foremost experts on the wiles of weather, Ronald Stewart, PhD, and Louis-Edmond Hamelin, PhD.

Ronald Stewart, PhD researches and teaches students at the McGill University department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences about extreme weather, particularly storms and their precipitation, droughts, storm-climate interactions, and future changes in these features. He will present Our Winter Storms, a talk discussing the frequency in occurrence of winter storms, their organization, how various forms of precipitation such as snow, rain, and freezing rain are produced, and the possible make-up of winter storms in the future. (In English)

Louis-Edmond Hamelin will speak on La nordicité mentale en hiver, a discussion of the Canadian polar world as an entity and the problems posed by the recent concept of nordicity, the state or level of being polar in the Northern Hemisphere. Hamelin, a geographer, is the Canadian dean of northern indexes and a leading scholar of, among other things, Canadians' perceptions of the North. He is also the founder of the Centre d'études nordiques and Emeritus Professor at Université Laval in Quebec City. (In French)

The Weather is curated by Cate Rimmer as part of a series of exhibitions centred on notions of the mundane. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Charles H. Scott Gallery at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver.

* Contest * all visitors to this free event will be eligible to win a copy of L'hiver et le nord, the 500-page definitive reference book on all things northern, by Louis-Edmond Hamelin.

The Gallery gratefully acknowledges ongoing support from the ministère de la Culture et des Communications, The Canada Council for the Arts and the Arts Council of Montreal.
